Abstract: Aims: To examine differences in perceptions of drug risks as indicators
of “risk-taking” in self-control theory among Greek and Swedish teenag-
ers. Additionally, differences in drug prevalence and the strength of asso-
ciation between “perceptions of drug risks” and drug use are investigated
in the two groups under study. Design: Cross-sectional school population
survey (1999 ESPAD), based on standardized methodological procedures.
Participants: Representative samples of a total sample of 5,845 high school
students (15-16 years old) from Greece and Sweden. Measurements: Anon-
ymous self-administered questionnaire. Substance use is measured with
substances including marijuana, LSD, crack, cocaine, ecstasy, heroin and
magic mushrooms. Perceptions of drug risks are measured with questions
about the risks of taking different types of drugs and in different frequen-
cies. Findings: More Greek teenagers take drugs and perceive low drug
risks than the Swedish students. The risk of taking different types of drugs
is much higher for Greek students perceiving low drug risks than their
Swedish counterparts. Conclusion: Greek teenagers are more vulnerable
to drug use than their Swedish peers. More preventive programmes and
school-based interventions should be designed and implemented in Greece
emphasizing the detrimental effects of drugs on individuals’ physical and
mental well-being.
